Why do people ask questions they already know the answer to?
Some say it’s to get some affirmation, some say it’s because they want to get a second option.
Could be. But that’s just wasted time. There’s Google for that.
The real question that’s worth asking is just two or three layers deeper and that’s the one you really don’t know the answer to.
The process is simple:
- You have a question
- Ask that question to yourself as if you were giving advice to someone else. How would you answer that question if someone else asked you?
- Try to answer that question to the best of your knowledge and abilities. You’d be surprised how many times you can actually give an answer, or at least a partial answer. Often, this will generate a better, more specific, question.
- Repeat the process until you can not even attempt to answer.
We are good at giving advice. Just not to ourselves.
